Split Double Header for Beaver Softball
The Penn State Beaver Softball squad are home today with the comfort of home and momentum building; Beaver looks to deliver a strong performance and set the tone early against their visiting opponent.
Game 1: Penn State Beaver (4-7) outlasted Me.-Augusta (15-1) in a wild, error-filled slugfest Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Field House, losing 23-14. The game featured constant traffic on the bases, big innings on both sides, and momentum swings that kept the score moving from the first frame through the final out.
Me.-Augusta struck first with a six-run opening inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues and timely hits to jump out early. Penn State Beaver answered in the second with a four-run response to cut into the deficit, then both teams traded runs in the third and fourth as Beaver continued to chip away while Me.-Augusta kept adding on. The decisive separation came in the fifth and sixth: Me.-Augusta posted another large inning to extend the lead, but Beaver countered with a five-run fifth and added again in the sixth to keep the game within reach. In the seventh, Me.-Augusta tacked on insurance, and Beaver pushed across late runs, but the comeback fell short as the final outs were recorded with the visitors still in front.
Beaver moved to 4-7 with 14 hits and drew 7 walks, producing runs throughout the lineup. Jaiden Patterson drove in four and reached base multiple times, while Mackenzie Boyd collected four hits and added extra-base damage during Beaver's mid-game rally. Kierstyn Mays also had a big day at the plate with four hits, and Beaver's offense generated multiple extra-base hits to fuel the comeback attempts. Penn State Beaver's loss ultimately came down to answering nearly every Me.-Augusta surge with offense of its own, keeping pressure on with consistent baserunners and timely swings. While the game was marked by defensive mistakes on both sides, Beaver's ability to produce in multiple innings and get key run-producing at bats late proved that they can keep up.
Game 2: Penn State Beaver walked off Me.-Augusta, 7–6, on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Field House in a back-and-forth game that featured early miscues, big two-out swings, and a late rally that flipped the result in the final inning. After Me.-Augusta erased multiple deficits and briefly grabbed the lead in the sixth, Beaver answered with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to end it.
Beaver struck first in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a passed ball to bring home a run before adding another on an RBI single from Reza Benson for a 2–0 edge. Me.-Augusta responded in the second, getting on the board via another passed ball and then jumping in front on Natalie Gilman's two-run single. The middle innings belonged to Beaver's steady pressure: a sacrifice RBI in the fourth tied it, and the fifth inning produced two more runs first on Reese Riordan's RBI single and then on Haydan Baucan's RBI double to push Beaver ahead 5–3. Me.-Augusta's biggest surge came in the sixth, when it plated three runs to take a 6–5 lead, highlighted by an RBI on a Beaver error, an RBI single by Audrey Nile, and an RBI single by Shannah Parsons. In the seventh, Beaver loaded the bases and, with two outs, Mackenzie Boyd delivered the decisive two-run single to left to complete the comeback.
Beaver finished with 13 hits and drew 10 walks, with Jaiden Patterson leading the way by reaching base four times and collecting three hits, including extra-base damage. Baucan drove in two and added a double, while Boyd's two-RBI walk-off single capped the day. In the circle, Boyd worked five innings before Kierstyn Mays closed with two scoreless frames to secure the win. The game ultimately turned on Beaver's ability to keep traffic on the bases all afternoon and then cash in at the biggest moment two outs in the seventh after Me.-Augusta had done the hard work to seize control an inning earlier.
