Second-Half Separation Sends the Lions to Road Loss at Shenango
A tight, high-scoring contest at the Buhl Club saw Penn State Beaver go toe-to-toe with Shenango, but a late second-half surge proved to be the difference in a hard-fought road loss.
Monaca, PA - Penn State Beaver and Penn State Shenango were deadlocked at the break Tuesday night at the Buhl Club, 41–41, before Beaver's offense kept pace in the second half but couldn't match Shenango's late separation in a 93–85 final. After an even first 20 minutes, Beaver put up 44 points after halftime, yet the game ultimately swung on Shenango's ability to create extra chances and finish key possessions down the stretch.
For Penn State Beaver, Joe Pinto led the way with 20 points on efficient shooting and a perfect night at the line, providing steady scoring whenever Beaver needed a response. Brandon Rue delivered a huge spark off the bench, pouring in 13 points while knocking down three triples without a miss, and Ronyell Coston was flawless from the court as well, adding 12 points in limited minutes while also contributing as a playmaker. Jabari Gayle filled the box score with 11 points and four assists, while Ny'zir Dix posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to anchor the glass; Trevor Franklin added five assists and three blocks, and the team collectively moved the ball well with 22 assists.
In the end, Beaver's balanced scoring and strong shooting weren't enough to overcome the second-half swing, as the visitors couldn't get the stops they needed to turn a tight contest into a road win. The Lions showed fight after halftime and got meaningful production from both starters and reserves, but the decisive stretch came after the break when the game tilted away from a tie, and Beaver was left chasing. The team will take the court again on Thursday, February 5th at 6pm in the Beaver Fieldhouse. They will take on Penn State Greater Allegheny in another PSUAC match-up!
