Fast Start Fuels Beaver to First Win of the Season
Beaver erupted for six runs in the first inning and rode a strong relief outing to a 12–6 victory over Canton during Spring Training.
Myrtle Beach, SC - Beaver used a huge first inning and steady pitching the rest of the way to pull away for a 12–6 win over Canton on March 8 at Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. After Canton struck first on a solo homer, the Lions answered immediately and never trailed again, improving to 1–5 on the young season.
Canton opened the scoring in the top of the first, but Beaver erupted for six runs in the bottom half to flip the game. The Lions' first-inning surge featured an RBI triple from Christopher Cann, plus additional runs created by aggressive baserunning and pressure that led to key miscues. Canton briefly made it a one-run game in the second by pushing across four, but Penn State-Beaver responded with two in the bottom of the inning, then added single runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and another in the sixth to build a comfortable cushion before the final out.
Offensively for Beaver, Christopher Cann led the way with a 4-for-6 night, including a triple and 2 RBIs, while also scoring once. Nicholas Campbell delivered the biggest run-production line, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a walk, and Mason Hsu added a key RBI single while scoring twice. Rome Requena reached base three times (1-for-3, two walks), scored twice, and swiped a bag, and Benjamin Ogle was on base four times (one hit, three walks), scored twice, and stole second. On the mound, Andres Molinar worked the first three innings, and Oscar De Luigi stabilized the game with six innings of relief, allowing just one run while striking out six to close out the win.
In the end, Beaver's early burst, consistent ability to get runners on (13 walks), and De Luigi's long relief outing proved decisive. The Lions combined timely hits with constant pressure on the bases to keep the scoreboard moving, turning a brief second-inning wobble into a wire-to-wire victory.
